The History of EAST GIPPSLAND SYMPHONIA

The "East Gippsland Symphonia" has gone through many name changes over the years. It began as a small orchestra known as the "Bairnsdale Orchestral Group" under the direction of Father John O'Kelly. In 1974 this ensemble changed it's name to "Bairnsdale Instrumental Group". This ensemble was conducted by local music specialist, John Brehaut who was leader for many years.

John Rogers, Roy Hoskin, Jeanette Osborne, Brian Bagley, David Watkins and Jeremy De Korte have all been Musical Directors of the Orchestra up to the end of 2003. During this period the Orchestra changed it's name to "East Gippsland Pops Orchestra ", then to "East Gippsland Variety Orchestra".

EGVO presented many concerts over the years including performances at the Melbourne Concert Hall, Leongatha, Orbost, Merimbula, Mallacoota, Paynesville, Raymond Island, Maffra, Lakes Entrance, Bruthen, Omeo and of course Bairnsdale.

Towards the end of 2003 EGVO set about looking for another Musical Director. Mr John Schmidli was appointed and took charge at the beginning of 2004. John has a vast musical background and has played trumpet in many venues throughout the world, including many successful years as Principal Trumpet with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and The Australian Pops Orchetsra.

In 2004 EGVO and the Bairnsdale Citizens' Band joined forces and performed a series of concerts in the area.

When John decided to retire in 2008 the position of Musical Director was most ably filled by local Music Teacher, Carryn Caithness. Under Carryn the Symphonia has continued to develop with the addition of many younger performers taken from local schools and the community.

EGS members come from many and varied backgrounds and ages range from young teenagers to very senior citizens - but all have one love - PLAYING AND SHARING MUSIC.

East Gippsland Symphonia is now administered under the Umbrella Organisation of the Bairnsdale Citizens' Band Inc., and with the "East Gippsland Brass" and the "BCB - Training Band" makes up a huge Community Musical association.
