Orange Bellied Parrot Count - Morning and Evening 27/7/03 In the salt marshes surrounding Lake Kakydra and Lake Melanhydra just west of Lake Wellington in Central Gippsland Linda and Kevin Penny, Alwyn Ryan (3 hours each) and Don Ripper (6 hours) on a lovely sunny day with Westerly breeze ranging from 5 –15 Kts. No OBP’s in fact no Psittacidae at all despite the fact that a small flock of Bluewings has been feeding on the pigface particularly around Lake Kakydra over the past two weeks Lake K. is full and Saline to taste. Both the Wellington drains flowing in strongly. Birds identified included:- Brown Falcon, Wedge Tailed Eagle, Nankeen Kestral, Richards Pippit, Striated Fieldwren, Yellow Spoonbill, Australian Pelican, Intermediate Egret, Black-winged Stilt, Black-fronted Dottrell, Australian Raven, Australian Magpie, Magpie Lark, Superb fairy Wren, Pacific Black Duck, Chestnut Teal, Grey Teal, Little Pied Cormorant, Little Cormorant, Black Shouldered Kite, Black Swan, Stubble Quail, Starling, Common Myna. Mammals seen:- Fox (5) Hare, Hog deer. Vegetation includes Pigface - some flowering and some with dry seed-heads, Silver tussock, Variety of reeds and rushes including phragmites.
