Individual Advocacy


Individual Advocacy is the provision of support for individuals with a disability (and where appropriate their families and carers) who are pursuing or affected by human rights or social justice issues.

Strategies may include acting or making representation on behalf of individuals with a disability, resourcing self representation or facilitating the development of advocacy relationships.


Possible Outcomes for Individual Advocacy


Possible outcomes for organisations undertaking Individual Advocacy may include:

  • greater self esteem.
  • improved and/or new skills.
  • greater participation in community non-segregated activities.
  • improved quality of life.
  • increased understanding of rights.
  • protection of a person's rights.
  • protection of a person's health.
  • protection of a person's life.
  • maintenance of existing positive life circumstances.
  • satisfaction of the person to whom support is provided.
  • empowerment of the person to whom support is provided.
  • improvements in information and support networks for individuals (families/supporters).
  • access to needed services (generic and disability).
  • complaints resolution.
