Where in the world is Mid Gippsland?

Gippsland is in the south-eastern Australian state of Victoria. The region forming much of the east of the state is known as Gippsland.

European explorer Count Paul Edmund Strzelecki passed to the south of our area in 1840. The first influx of white settlers came in 1860 with the discovery of gold in the Baw Baw Ranges to the north.

The eighteen clubs in the Mid Gippsland Bowling Association are dotted along the Princes Highway (Highway No 1 or M1) with Garfield (just south of the highway)being the closest to Melbourne (about 80 km) and Traralgon, the furthest (about 162 km)

Seven of our smaller clubs are situated off the highway: Garfield  - about 18 kilometers  west of Drouin; Longwarry - about 9 kms west of Drouin; Neerim - 18 km north of Warragul; Thorpdale - 12 km south of Trafalgar; Yallourn North - 8 km north of Moe; Yinnar - 20 km south of Morwell and Boolarra - 28 km south of Morwell.

Garfield and Longwarry joined the M.G.B.A. in August 2000

The eastern part of Mid Gippsland is well known for its electricity generating stations, using brown coal, mined from huge open cuts, to fire the boilers. The three largest cities, Traralgon, Morwell and Moe have a combined population of about 60,000. This part of Gippsland is also referred to as the Latrobe Valley. The towns are picturequely set in and beneath beautiful green hills. The surrounding district mainly supports dairy farms.
